Sometimes living in Madrid can make you feel like you are surrounded by Spanish language, but there are many opportunities to speak English in this great city. I’d like to recommend some for those who are interested in practising their English in fun and different ways.
- Take a walking tour of the city, for FREE!
New Europe Madrid run a very successful tour of inner city Madrid. This is a three hour tour where they provide «info-tainment», a unique guide to Madrid through storytelling. The dynamic tour guides take you to all the classic places including some lesser-known areas too. So not only will you learn something about the city you live in, you will also get some great experience interacting with fellow English speakers. Did I mention it’s FREE?
- Cooking classes in English.
There are many cooking courses available in Madrid and quite a few that are offered in English. Depending on whether you would like to brush up on your Spanish cooking skills or learn about cooking traditions from other countries and cultures, either way it makes for a great way to explore another side to English learning. Just google it.
- English quiz nights.
A popular tradition back home in Ireland, English «pub quizzes» are becoming more and more popular in Madrid. J&J Books and Coffee, right beside metro Noviciado, host a quiz night every Friday at 11pm. Be prepared, these quizzes can get busy and very competitive. J&J’s also offer language exchange nights too and downstairs you will find an English language bookshop with more than 25,000 books ranging from one to four euros!
